Hidden Wonders: A Boxing Day at Brockholes Nature Reserve

The dynamis duo at Brockholes!

There’s no better way to shake off the Christmas indulgence than with a dose of fresh Lancashire air. This morning, we traded the sofa for the trails of Brockholes Nature Reserve near Preston, and it was nothing short of magical. It always astounds me that, despite its proximity to Junction 31 of the M6 and the accompanying noise, there is so much wildlife to see.

We took the yellow way marked trail, which is about 3 miles.

Wildlife Highlights

Despite the cold, the reserve was buzzing with life. It didn’t take long for our feathered and furry neighbors to make an appearance.

The Woodland Hustle:

We were greeted by the usual suspects—grey squirrels darting through the leaf litter and blue tits flitting energetically between the bare branches.

The Acrobat:

A highlight of the woodland walk was spotting several nuthatches. Their distinctive “gravity-defying” crawl down the tree trunks is always a joy to watch.

Natures Anglers:

Over the lakes, the silhouettes were unmistakable. We watched herons standing like statues in the shallows and cormorants drying their wings on the jetties.

Masters of the Sky:

Just as we looked up, two buzzards began circling overhead, their broad wings catching the morning thermals as they called to one another.

A Quiet Moment in the Trees

The real “gift” of the day came when we slowed down near the edge of the woods. Almost perfectly camouflaged against the bark and the tawny winter leaves, a deer stood watching us. If we hadn’t paused at that exact moment, we would have missed it entirely. It stayed still for a few seconds before disappearing silently back into the thicket—a true Boxing Day treat.

Whether you’re a serious birder or just looking for a peaceful escape, Brockholes never disappoints. The Floating Village looked stunning in the winter light, providing the perfect backdrop for a much-needed breath of fresh air.
