Visiting the Rock Garden

The rock garden at Sizergh Castle is a must-see, especially in autumn when the acers display their breathtaking hues. The Rock Garden was designed in 1926-8 by local architect Charles Henry Wearing and is to the north of the house. It is created from large water-worn limestone blocks and water rivulets/small ponds, which are fed by an upper catchment pond and drain into the lake.

Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

  1. Plan your visit during late October to early November for the best autumn colors.
  2. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the garden paths can be uneven.
  3. Bring your camera to capture the stunning scenery.
  4. Take your time to explore the various sections of the rock garden.
  5. Don’t forget to visit the castle itself to learn more about its history.

What to Expect

As you stroll through the rock garden, you will be greeted by:

  • Vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves of the acers.
  • Beautifully arranged rock formations that enhance the natural beauty.
  • Tranquil pathways that invite you to explore further.
  • Wildlife that thrives in this serene environment.

Conclusion

A visit to Sizergh Castle and its rock garden during autumn is an unforgettable experience. The stunning colors of the acers, combined with the rich history of the castle, create a perfect day out for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, Sizergh Castle is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your itinerary.

The New Inn, Yealand Conyers

We had booked a Sunday Lunch at The New Inn in Yealand Conyers and, as the rain started, we left Sizergh for the 20 minute drive south to our meal. The meal was lovely. For any of my readers who have experienced the Rag Pudding at The Black Bull in Edgworth, the beef and ale suet pudding was much more refined, but still substantial and the chips were the best I’ve had for years! It was, however, more expensive than the Black Bull. Heather had pork cheek, crackling, butter mash and greens and says that was great too. We can both highly reccomend the New Inn.

Sadly, while we were eating the rain set in, so, rather than a sit on the front at Arnside, we went home.
