Immigration Man

Keir Starmer and Georgia Meloni

For three weeks from the 18th of June, Heather and I were on holiday in France. As this period included the general election, we applied for postal votes which didn’t arrive before we left on holiday, meaning we could not vote. The results in our constituency, Fylde, were close. The Conservative candidate won but with a majority of only 561, meaning practically the only splodge of blue in North West England is Fylde. We both felt dissappointed that we could not vote but pleased that the Labour Party won with such a huge majority.

However, the sight of our Prime Minister discussing immigration controls with the avowed very right wing, Georgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy makes me feel slightly sick.

There are a number of things our government have done or not done which I’m not comfortable with, but, given the mess the Tories left the country in, I’ll go along with difficult economic decisions having to be made (I think……… largely) but taking advice from a very right wing political party is definitely a step too far.

Where next Keir? Hungary?

Thursday morning looked a bit iffy on the north coast so we headed south to Auray, where we made an interesting discovery. We have some photos of our boys on holiday which we have always thought were in Dinan, but it became obvious that they were actually taken in Auray. It’s a lovely town and…

We’re just back from a couple of days in Clitheroe. It’s a lovely town and it’s only 40 minutes away from us. I was bought a night in The Spinning Block Hotel, which is part of the Holmes Mill complex, for my birthday last November and we finally managed to take advantage of my very…

We had an excellent pilgrims menu in the hotel dining room…. 3 courses, bottle of wine, bottle of water for 12 euros each. The dormitory slept 40, th biggest we had stayed in, but it was quiet and everyone was shattered,…

  • Walk like a………….

It’s 10 days since I last blogged, and, while I would love to say I’ve been walking every day, actually, due to a combination of tired knee, horrible weather and work (yes, I’m still doing a bit), I’m falling behind the ultimate target. I was hoping to get the double marathon distance done this week…

  • A Chocolate Story

Back when I was at school, in the middle of the last century, we were taught about the great Victorian philanthropist industrialists, and foremost in these families were the Cadbury clan. The Cadburys were Quakers. That doesn’t mean they just ate porridge, but does mean they were devout Christians and pacifists. In 2010 Cadbury was…
