Meet on The Ledge

Croasdale Brook, Slaidburn

Another walk in the country on Saturday. This time in The Forest of Bowland from Slaidburn up to Stocks Reservoir and back. This is a beautiful walk which can be extended or reduced with several optional starting points. There were very few people about, presumably as the fine weather had sent everyone off to The Lake District instead. Unfortunately, from lunchtime onwards, the cloud came down and it was dull and humid.

Stocks Reservoir. It provides water for BVlackpool and The Fylde

I had hoped to do the full circuit of the reservoir from Slaidburn which is about 11 miles, but it became pretty obvious after about 3 miles that I wasn’t going to make that due to my creaky joints. I ended up walking to the picnic site by the reservoir and back which was almost exactly 8 miles. OK, but a bit dissappointing given my original plan.

Any of you who know the area might be wondering about the title of this post as there are absolutely no ledges on this walk. The answer is, we’ve booked tickets to go and see Fairport Convention at the Lowther Pavilion next February. This will be the umpteenth time we’ve seen them since Ainsdale Beach in 1971 (That’s 53 years ago!!!!!!!) with Steeleye Span, taking in a few visits to The Cropredy Festival. The late, great Dave Swarbrick really was a mean fiddler. For those of you who are in the dark about the folk rock boom pf the late 60’s early 70’s, the first band on are Steeleye Span, who are still touring as well.

    1. Granada TV. Have a look at the video. They filmed for about an hour as I remember and then pulled the plug. Cue near riot! I think Fairports played a couple more to placate the mob. It was advertised by a very small article in the Echo a few nights prior to the filming. I couldn’t see me on screen…….. probably a good thing! Only 53 years ago. Maddy Prior was wearing the same clothes last year when we saw Steeleye Span.
